Your Kokomo, IN Dentist Explains the Need for Extractions
A dental extraction is a procedure used to remove a tooth from the mouth, most often needed when a tooth is too damaged to be practically repaired. Common reasons for a tooth extraction include:
- Severe decay or infection that makes repairing the tooth impractical or too costly
- Advanced gum disease that risks affecting the surrounding tissue and bone if the tooth isn’t removed
- A tooth blocking other teeth from properly coming in
- Extractions needed to create space during orthodontic treatment
- Wisdom teeth removal, whether before or after they emerge

What to Expect
Your dentist will begin by administering anesthetic to numb the area and minimize discomfort. During the procedure, you’ll feel some pressure as the tooth is removed, but you shouldn’t experience any pain. Most extractions are completed within just a few minutes.
Immediately afterward, some light bleeding is normal, and a piece of gauze will be placed over the extraction site. Minor bleeding may continue for around 24 hours before tapering off. Be sure to follow your dentist’s instructions on changing the gauze and any additional care needed after the procedure.
