Dental Cleaning

Brighten Your Smile with Routine Dental Cleanings

At Family Practice Dentistry, we want our patients to understand just how important routine dental cleanings are for maintaining good oral health. Even with careful brushing and flossing, mineralized plaque can still build up over time, especially in those hard-to-reach areas. That’s why we recommend scheduling a professional cleaning every six months.

How It’s Done

A typical dental cleaning takes between 30 minutes and an hour. A trained hygienist performs the cleaning, and Dr. Welch will often come in afterward to complete an exam. Most patients find the process painless and comfortable from start to finish.

There are two key steps involved. The first is scaling, where the hygienist carefully removes plaque and tartar buildup from the surface of each tooth, either by hand or with an electric scaler, depending on preference. The hygienist will also check along the gumline to clear away any plaque hiding in those pockets. The second step is polishing, which removes any remaining plaque and leaves your teeth smooth and clean. Polishing tools come with different-sized heads, making it easy to reach even the trickiest spots in your mouth.
