Protect Your Smile with Porcelain Crowns at Family Practice Dentistry
Unlike fillings, which only cover a small portion of a tooth, a crown (or cap) encases the entire visible surface of the tooth essentially becoming its new outer layer. Crowns are typically used when a tooth is too broken or decayed for a filling to effectively repair it. By fully surrounding the damaged tooth, a crown adds strength and protection while also improving its overall appearance.
Crowns are also commonly used to restore a tooth’s original shape, particularly after a break. While they’re available in a variety of materials, most crowns contain some amount of porcelain, giving them a natural look and feel that closely matches real teeth.
How It’s Done
During your first visit, the tooth is reshaped and an impression is taken to design your custom crown. This usually requires removing a small portion of the tooth so the crown can fit properly. Once the tooth is reshaped, your dentist uses a special material to capture an accurate impression, which is then sent to a dental lab where your permanent crown is crafted. In the meantime, you’ll be given a temporary crown to protect the tooth between visits.
When you return, your dentist will remove the temporary crown and fit the new permanent one checking that it feels comfortable and blends naturally with the color of your surrounding teeth before it’s permanently cemented in place.
