Restore Your Smile Fast at Family Practice Dentistry
Dental bonding is a restorative procedure in which a tooth-colored resin is applied to a tooth and hardened using ultraviolet light. Compared to veneers or crowns, bonding is a faster and more affordable option, making it a great choice for smaller cosmetic improvements. Unlike veneers and crowns, bonding can typically be completed in a single office visit, since there’s no need for a custom piece to be made at a dental lab.
Bonding also generally requires removing less of the natural tooth enamel compared to veneers or crowns. That said, since it doesn’t last quite as long and is more prone to staining over time, bonding is best suited for minor cosmetic touch-ups rather than larger restorative work.
How It’s Done
The bonding process usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes per tooth. Your dentist will first determine the exact shade of your teeth to select a resin that blends in naturally. The tooth is then prepared by lightly roughening its surface and applying a liquid conditioner, which helps the bonding material adhere more effectively.
Once prepped, your dentist applies the resin to the tooth and hardens it in place using an ultraviolet light. Finally, the resin is carefully shaped and polished to ensure a comfortable, natural-looking fit.
