All You Need to Know About Emergency Dentist
What Is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency can take many forms, but it’s often marked by severe pain, discomfort, or difficulty opening the mouth. Several specific situations fall under this category:
Sudden Tooth Instability
As an adult, your permanent teeth should feel stable and secure. If you notice a tooth becoming loose or shifting unexpectedly, contact our office right away so Dr. Welch can evaluate whether it can be restabilized or if replacement treatment is needed.
Fractured, Cracked, or Chipped Teeth
This is one of the most common dental emergencies, typically caused by a piece of enamel breaking off. Since enamel is one of the toughest substances in the body, any damage should be evaluated promptly. If the pain is mild, it may be safe to wait a day before scheduling an appointment — but if the pain is severe or debilitating, contact our office immediately.
Tissue Injuries
Cuts, punctures, or tears affecting the lips, cheeks, or inside of the mouth are considered tissue injuries. Left untreated, these can lead to further complications and discomfort.
Knocked-Out Tooth
A knocked-out tooth is one of the most serious dental emergencies, often indicating trauma to the surrounding nerve and tissue. Acting quickly gives the best chance of saving the tooth.
What Should You Do for a Knocked-Out Tooth?
Avoid touching the root of the tooth. Gently rinse it with milk, and if possible, try placing it back into the socket. If that’s not possible or too painful, place the tooth in a cup of milk and contact our office immediately.
Is an Abscess a Dental Emergency?
An abscess is a swollen, pus-filled area in the mouth and is considered a serious dental emergency. Contact our office right away if you experience any of the following:
- Swelling or redness in the gums
- Persistent pain
- Fever
- Tooth sensitivity
- An open sore inside the mouth
