All You Need to Know About Dentures
What Are Dentures?
Dentures are prosthetic appliances used to replace missing teeth, designed to closely resemble your natural teeth while offering both comfort and everyday flexibility. Beyond closing gaps in your smile, dentures also help protect your gums from further decay, disease, and injury. With a properly fitted set of dentures, most patients find their jaw muscles and bite strength gradually improve after tooth loss.
Are There Different Types of Dentures?
There are four main types of dentures available at Family Practice Dentistry:
Traditional Full Dentures
The most common type of denture. Dr. Welch removes any remaining damaged or unwanted teeth, allows the mouth time to heal, and then places the full denture once healing is complete.
Immediate Full Dentures
Ideal for patients who don’t want to go without teeth while healing. Dr. Welch follows the same process as traditional dentures but creates a mold in advance, allowing a temporary denture to be placed immediately. While this offers instant results, the denture may eventually need replacing since the mouth continues healing and changing shape — at which point Dr. Welch fits the permanent denture.
Partial Dentures
Recommended for patients who still have healthy natural teeth remaining in the upper or lower jaw. Partial dentures use these existing teeth for support and can be easily removed for cleaning.
Implant-Retained Dentures
These dentures are held in place using dental implants surgically placed into the jawbone, with crowns securing the denture firmly in position.
How Are Mini Implants Used in Denture Treatment?
Mini implants work similarly to traditional implants but are much smaller in size, using either a titanium post with a ball-and-socket design or a rounded post with a gasket. They’re a great option for patients who don’t have enough jawbone density to support traditional implants but still want a secure, stable fit.
Dr. Welch places mini implants at the base of the denture to address instability, particularly in the lower dental arch, snapping securely into place to hold the denture firmly.
What Do Dentures Feel Like?
Dentures are designed to look and feel as close to natural teeth as possible. That said, since they are a prosthetic appliance, it’s normal to need some time to adjust before they feel fully comfortable. Dr. Welch recommends wearing them as consistently as possible to help speed up the adjustment process.
